Merck Foundation, a non-profit company and a subsidiary of Merck KGaA Germany marks ‘World Cancer Day 2018’ to create awareness around cancer and build cancer care capacity with the aim to increase the limited number of oncologists across Africa and developing countries. 
 
The CEO of Merck Foundation Dr Rasha Kelej recently visited Muhimbili University of Health and Allied Science, Tanzania to meet the alumni of ‘Merck Oncology Fellowship Program’ with the aim to evaluate the impact of the one and two-year medical oncology fellowship programs conducted in Tata memorial center in India. Through ‘Merck Oncology Fellowship Program’ foundation has trained the first medical oncologist in Tanzania, Dr Christina V. Malichewe. 
 
During her visit to Tanzania Dr Rasha Kelej emphasized,” We strongly believe that building professional capacity is the right strategy to improve access to quality and equitable cancer care in the continent.&nbsp; Dr Christina is one of the 59 future oncologists, Merck Foundation has Committed to train for Africa.” 
 
In June 2017, BIO Ventures for Global Health (BVGH), and the African Organization for Research and Training in Cancer (AORTIC), released a white paper on the African continent’s emerging cancer crisis. 
 
Over 20% of African countries have no access to cancer treatments at all, while access is limited and sporadic in other countries. Later-stage diagnosis in African patients contributes to poorer outcomes. For example, 5-year female breast cancer relative survival rates are 46% in Uganda and 12% in The Gambia, compared with around 90% in developed countries.

The first medical oncologist in Tanzania, Dr. Christina V. Malichewe said, “I can now make difference for my patients. We don’t have medical oncology to manage patients through chemotherapy, we only have clinical oncologists and radiotherapists. Thus, one-year medical oncology fellowship in India has enabled me to save many lives, every day. Thanks to Merck Foundation for this opportunity in Tanzania." 
 
During her meeting with Dr Christina, Dr. Rasha Kelej said "I’ve enjoyed every moment with her, witnessing the great impact she makes every day on her patients' lives. Through her, we transform people's lives every day."&nbsp;

Sarah Opendi, Uganda Minister of State of Health said, “Merck Foundation and ministry of health of Uganda have been partners for a very long time, we have been working together on various issues with special focus on cancer and infertility. We appreciate the efforts of Merck Foundation in building cancer care capacity in Uganda and other African countries, and we hope soon we would have world class cancer facilities and expert locally in our beloved country.”

The first fellow for ‘Merck Oncology Fellowship Program’ from Uganda Dr. Sekitene Seei Buwambaza said, “Merck Oncology Fellowship program is very important to me because it is giving me an opportunity to learn and improve on the way, I have been doing things concerning the management of cancer patients. It is also ushering me into the new trend that cancer care and research is taking in this 21st century. A bond with Merck Foundation as an alumnus is going to keep me updated with new developments in cancer care.”&nbsp;

Fellowship Program’ from Uganda, Dr Musana Othiniel, an obstetrician and gynaecologist from Uganda, “Uganda as a country lacks a national cancer screening program yet cervical cancer and breast cancer remains the most common cancers and accounts for the highest proportion of cancers requiring treatment. The country also has a shortage of good gynae-oncology clinicians, researchers and educators in Uganda hence limiting access for women with cancer to screening, diagnostic and treatment services.”

He further added, “The ‘Merck Oncology Fellowship Program’ will expand my knowledge on the selection of appropriate clinical and research methodology used in gynae-oncology. I hope to improve my skills in carrying out appropriate and evidence-based clinical diagnosis and treatment but also empower me with excellent clinical education skill to mentor other young health workers in gynae-oncology. “

Moreover, 50 future oncologists either joined or will join one, two or three years 'Merck Oncology Fellowship Program' from many sub-Saharan African countries out of which, countries such as Gambia and Liberia never had oncologists. 
 
Merck Foundation will provide eight doctors from both Uganda and Tanzania with one -year medical oncology fellowship program. Furthermore, together with the University of Nairobi, Merck Foundation established the first two-year medical oncology fellowship program for Sub-Saharan Africa.

Le manque de moyens financiers n'est pas le seul défi en Afrique et dans les pays en voie de développement, mais la pénurie de personnel de santé qualifié capable de s'occuper de la prévention, le diagnostic précoce et la prise en charge du cancer à tous les niveaux des systèmes de santé est un plus grand défi. Par conséquent, la Merck Foundation a mené le « Merck Oncology Fellowship Program » qui vise à renforcer les capacités professionnelles en matière de prise en charge du cancer dans le but d'augmenter le nombre limité d'oncologues en Afrique et dans les pays en voie de développement. In 2017 alone, MF initiated the following activities in partnership with academia, ministries of health and the offices of First Ladies in more than 35 countries:

Merck Cancer Access Program: 
Over 30 African physicians received Oncology Fellowship programs spanning one to two years, with the aim to help increase the limited number of oncologists in Africa. 
&nbsp; 
Merck more than a Mother: 
More than 40 candidates received three-month clinical training to be embryologists and fertility specialists in Africa and Asia to improve quality, regulated and safe fertility care in developing countries. 
&nbsp; 
Merck Diabetes and Hypertension Awards: 
Over 50 medical postgraduates will receive a one-year online diploma in diabetes or preventive cardiovascular medicines, as part of the effort to establish a platform of diabetes and hypertension experts in Africa and Asia.

The Merck Foundation upholds its commitment to building capacity and improving access to quality and equitable healthcare solutions with special focus on cancer and fertility care in Africa. So far, doctors from Uganda, Zambia, Ethiopia, Namibia, Tanzania, Ghana, Sierra Leone, South Africa, Botswana, Liberia, Rwanda, Kenya, Chad, Niger, Guinea, Gambia, Sri Lanka, Cambodia, Bangladesh, Myanmar, and Nepal have benefitted from Merck Foundation programs. The CAP was launched by Merck in 2012 to expand healthcare capacity in the areas of research and development, supply-chain integrity and efficiency, pharmacovigilance, medical education, and community awareness in Africa and developing countries. 
&nbsp; 
Through the combined community campaign, Merck aims to provide more than 2,000 Ugandans with free cancer education and diabetes screening and advice on how to lead healthier lives to enable them prevent the diseases.

In addition, in 2016 Merck aims to reach 30,000 Ugandans with free diabetes screening and education through its “Merck Uganda Diabetes Day” campaign which is dubbed “Every Day is a Diabetes Day”.

Merck Uganda Diabetes Day is part of the pan African initiative “Merck Africa Diabetes Day” which aims to provide 300,000 persons in Africa with diabetes free screening and education in 2016.

“Supporting healthy families, healthy communities, healthy economies - this is our over-all target we want to achieve”, said Kai Beckmann, Member of the Executive Board of Merck. “We are convinced, that this initiative will make a great contribution to advance cancer and diabetes healthcare in Uganda. The close partnership with ministries of health and universities in Africa is a key for the success of the diabetes and cancer awareness campaign.”

At the campaign, Uganda’s Minister of State of Health, Sarah Opendi stated that most patients report to the health facility when the cancer is at an advanced stage which poses a challenge because nothing much can be done to save the patient’s life. “This is partly due to the nature of the cancers since they have no symptoms during the early stages but also due to our poor health seeking behaviours”. 
&nbsp; 
“According to the World Health Organization (WHO), over one third of cancer deaths are due to preventable causes such as a viral infection, poor nutrition and widespread tobacco use,” said Sarah Opendi. “It is important to note that once diagnosed early cancer can be treated and cured. Uganda just like other developing countries faces a wide range of health system challenges and cancer is often not a priority in limited resource settings. Therefore the Ministry of Health appreciates private public partnerships with reputable companies like Merck to promote key health guidelines and raise awareness about cancer so that people learn how to detect and prevent it,” Opendi added.

Successful awareness campaigns on diabetes in Uganda

Merck previously partnered with the Ministry of Health, Makerere University and Uganda Diabetes Association to carry out medical camps and nationwide diabetes awareness through text messages via mobile phones (SMS) to healthcare providers and community members.

Today Merck addresses cancer and diabetes at the same campaign, which will help to target the common risk factors for non-communicable diseases (NCDs) such as tobacco use, harmful use of alcohol, unhealthy diet and physical inactivity.

According to WHO, by 2020 there are expected to be 16 million new cases of cancer every year, 70% of which will be in developing countries where governments are least prepared to address the growing cancer burden and where survival rates are often less than half those of more developed countries.

Sarah Opendi emphasized: “Cancer awareness is very low in Africa, regardless whether the patient is educated or not. For example even doctors, teachers and bank managers are late in responding to the disease, therefore our partnership with Merck to implement their Cancer Control Program is very important for Uganda since educating the public and healthcare providers about the signs and symptoms of cancer will help promote early detection and better survival outcomes.”

While people across the globe were recognizing World Cancer Day: “We can. I can” to highlight the on-going fight against cancer, Merck joined hands with Uganda’s Ministry of Health to raise awareness about cancer early detection and prevention in the heart of Africa, highlighting the fact that reducing the global burden of the disease depends on the work and dedication of many to prevent and treat it.&nbsp; 
 
“We have no doubt that in order to prevent and reduce the high death rates from cancer and other non-communicable diseases (NCDs), we will need to see collaboration and collective action from health ministries, governments, NGOs, academia, media and industry. The size and complexity of the task is so large that no single institution can manage on its own, and so integration of effort is necessary to improve access to sustainable cancer care in Africa. We believe that prevention is better than cure, so today Merck joins hands with Ministry of Health to raise cancer awareness in the rural areas of Uganda,” said Rasha Kelej, Chief Social Officer of Merck Healthcare.

Merck has reached more than 4,000 Ugandans to enable them to prevent the diseases and give them advice on how to lead healthier lives. By 2018 Merck aims to reach 100,000 community members through its combined diabetes and cancer awareness campaigns as part of Merck Cancer Control Program-MCCP. Merck aims to improve access to cancer care in Africa via conducting&nbsp;Merck Cancer Day: TOGETHER WE CAN FIGHT CANCER EVERY DAY.

Merck started its Cancer Control Program: “Together we can fight Cancer Every Day” in May 2015. The program is a new initiative of Merck’s 5 year Capacity Advancement Program (CAP). 
Through the program, Merck will hold cancer awareness and prevention campaigns across the continent under the umbrella of&nbsp;Merck Cancer Days: “Together we can fight Cancer Every Day”&nbsp;to encourage people to think about cancer early detection and prevention every day.

“Merck Cancer Access Program”- M-CAP roadmap and CEO news in Africa

Merck in partnership with University of Nairobi, Nairobi Government and Ministry of Health, kicked off their first combined Diabetes and Cancer campaign in Nairobi, Kenya as part of Merck Cancer Control Program (MCCP) in May 2015. The program is a new initiative of Merck’s 5 year Capacity Advancement Program (CAP) which this year for the first time includes cancer. 
 
“The Merck Cancer Control Program (MCCP) aims to partner with top experts across the globe to assist African countries in implementing comprehensive cancer prevention and control programs,” said Belen Garijo, CEO of Merck Healthcare during the launch. “This campaign is part of a very ambitious 5 year program, Merck Cancer Control Program- MCCP which will be rolled out in other African countries within the year and will be augmented by community awareness and strong educational programs for medical students across Africa,” she added. 
 
More than 2,000 people will be targeted with free cancer education and diabetes screening to enable Kenyans prevent the diseases and give them advice on how to lead healthier lives. By 2018 Merck aims to reach 100,000 community members through its combined diabetes and cancer awareness campaigns. 
 
At the launch of the campaign Dr Evans Kidero, the Governor of Nairobi stated that: “Diabetes is a silent deadly disease that is growing rapidly in Kenya and across Africa and in developing countries, as is cancer. Therefore I salute Merck for coming with the idea of conducting Combined Cancer and Diabetes campaigns since there are common risk factors between the two diseases and as well as the rest of NCDs, such as tobacco use, harmful use of alcohol, unhealthy diet and physical inactivity.” 
 
“The challenges in the health sector are diverse and resources are often limited hence we need to join hands with reputable partners such as Merck to fight this emerging threat from NCDs like diabetes and cancer through any support possible especially in creating national capacity and increasing awareness of the threats and ways to prevent the diseases,” Dr Kidero added.
